Liana Satenstein is a former Vogue journalist, a current contributor to the magazine, and the author of an Insta/YouTube show called Neverworns (she also has a Substack of the same name, read it here). The show is about personal style and clothes people bought but never wore. I like to watch it, it’s humorous, but to buy something and never wear it? That’s crazy, I thought to myself. I have zero such clothes. And then I opened my closet.
There simply comes a time when you can’t relate to a piece of clothing you bought in college or when you don’t fit in it anymore. There’s a big category of gifted clothes you’ll receive now and then if you work in fashion or from friends and family who buy you these because you’re into fashion. Then there’s a category known to fashion students - especially those who, like myself, didn’t go on to become a designer - the clothes you designed in college. And then there are impulse buys, the worst kind of neverworns since they come with a sour taste of guilt and longing for the money you spent.
I have a few pieces from each of these categories of neverworns myself. I’m not proud of it, so I did a little experiment. I chose three pieces of neverworns and styled them with other things I rarely wear. I also included a few things I often wear. You know, to make the expectation that I’ll start wearing my neverworns after this experiment more realistic.
Beige jumper
This jumper was a gift from H&M while I was still a full-time editor. It’s a fine merino wool jumper from their premium line, but it was too oversized for me. I wanted to regift it to someone, but it simply never happened, so I’m regifting it to myself now.
White turtleneck
Why would anyone buy a white turtleneck? I don’t know, honestly. If I remember correctly, it was a part of a set of two, a white and a black one. It was an impulse buy, for sure. I just wanted the black one and thought I’d find a way to use the white one. So, here I am.
Ballgown
I got this dress from Twins, a Croatian brand that no longer exists. It wasn’t an impulse buy, but I did buy it knowing I’ll wear it to a single theatre awards ceremony. And that’s what happened precisely. Here I am now, trying to make amends.
What about your neverworns? You must have them. Show us in the comments, or even better, join The Hunt thread in our Substack chat, and maybe you’ll find someone who wants your neverworns.

Hi! I'm seeing this now. I love this!! Bravo for converting these neverworns. Have you kept the first jumper for good?
